Abortions Should Be Banned - Hon. Wilkinson, Youth Mp For Hohoe Constituency.
A member of the Youth Model Parliament for the Hohoe Constituency Hon. Ameyaw Nana Kwadwo Wilkinson has warned that, the rate of abortions in the country is very awful therefore represents a national security threat and that measures must be taken to repress it.
Speaking on ...Hon. Wilkinson said, According to Guttmacher Institute, maternal mortality is the second most common cause of death among women in Ghana, and more than 1 in 10 maternal deaths are the results of abortions.
He also stated that, The abortion law in Ghana, enacted in 1985, states that an abortion performed by a qualified medical practitioner is legal, if the pregnancy is as a result of rape, incest or "defilement of a female idiot;" if continuation of the pregnancy would risk the life the woman or threaten her physical or mental health; or if there is a substantial risk the child would suffer from a serious physical abnormality or disease.
He added, a mother kills her unborn child because it's unwanted, but she's not charged for murder. Is it right? There is about 50 million abortions per year worldwide, and approximately 118,000 per day, but why? Is it because rape or incest, health problems with either the mother or the child, or just because the baby is unwanted or Inconvenience at the time? . He said and supported that abortions should be because too many babies are being killed from abortions, if you don't want a child you could always put it up for adoption, and most mothers don't understand the consequences that occur from abortion.
Hon. Wilkinson said, Is there really difference between abortion and murder? If a doctor killed a child one minute after it was born, it would be murder, but if a doctor killed a child one minute before the child was born it would be the mothers choice. 53% of abortions occur before the 9th week of pregnancy.
Ending his debate, Hon Wilkinson made some recommendations that can help suppress abortion in our homeland.
He said, The national government in Ghana, along with non governmental partners, should take steps to reduce the rate of abortions.
He highlighted that, the press, the ministry of health, Ghana health service and members of the judicial organ should educate the public that, abortion is legally allowed under some circumstances in Ghana and disseminate information on how and where to obtain safe and legal a abortion services.
He said another measure to adopt is,Improving contraceptive services through offering a wide range of methods and high quality counseling services, so that women can identify and adopt methods that best meet their needs and prevent unintended pregnancies.
Hon.Wilkinson also added that, in order to control the rate of abortions in Ghana, parents, the youth, organizations, churches and the government must join hands to achieve the goal.
