Unemployment and the way to curb it - Wilkinson, Mp for HOhoe in the Youth Model Parliament

Hon. Ameyaw Nana Kwadwo Wilkinson

YMP for HOhoe Constituency.

Speaking in parliament, on the topic "Youth Unemployment - A national security threat, what successive government have done or failed to do right and how the youth can break this bane before it's critical" Hon. Wilkinson said;

I commend the successive governments for their efforts to finding the solutions to unemployment in Ghana.

Unemployment is recognized wherever in the world as a major factor affecting the growth of the world’s economy. Unemployment centered on Ghana in summary is caused by various reasons that come from both the demand side(employer) and the supply side (worker) which in some case is beyond the government’s plan to control it. The employers only suffer from certain factors like global recession, high interest rates, financial crisis preventing them to employ more.

According to the report by tradingeconomics.com unemployment has increased by 2.40% in March 2019 in Ghana. Unemployment adversely affects the disposable income of families, diminishes employee morale, physical and mental health are also affected. This increases the rate of crime and reduce rate of volunteerism.

The potential workers on the other hand are the major affected parties of unemployment. In as much as the government want to help the employers sector, much attention is needed on the side of employees.

The policy to Intensify Entrepreneurship should be focused at the basic level of one’s education to prepare the mindset of this youth towards their potential growth on entrepreneurship especially Looking at Agric Business, Agric business will promote agriculture amongst the youth and also promote entrepreneurship centered around Agric which will create more self employment

The youth from the basic level should be taught education is not only to be employed but established great business ideas and funds should be provided to support those ideas.

It’s time as well parents allow their wards to focus on their strength and passion but not detecting for them which will reduce misallocation of human resource thus right job for wrong people to promote economic growth.

Another solutions to unemployment is SKILLS TRAINING programs in which workers can get retrained for jobs that are in high demand. Training could be online or virtual as well as in-person within the private sector.

In conclusion, government should invest more on the vocational education program and as well provide working space relating to the vocational skills for the country’s future growth.

Thank you.
