It's Long Overdue, the Ghanaian Youth Deserves a Better Education System - Youth Mp, Hon. Wilkinson
A student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology who doubles as the Youth Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency in the youth model Parliament under YEC and Advocate for women empowerment and quality education and also aspiring youth mp for for Kintampo north under the youth leadership Parliament, Hon. Wilkinson Nana Kwadwo Ameyaw has tasked the government and the ministry of education, to do more in the education sector.
On The Diaries YouTube political show he said, let me commend the government about it outstanding efforts to make our education system a better one. It gives us hope that one day our system will be a better one. He said the Ghana education system is quite an old education system that still exist. It has produced so many genius minds and great personalities like H.E John Agyekum Kuffour, H.E John Dramani Mahama, the current education minister, Hon. Yaw Osei Adutwum and others that are making Ghana proud all over African and the world as well. He added that, while it's one of the oldest system, it's still not that developed when compared to others, which are infact newer. This is so as other countries have gone through growth and advancement, but the Ghanaian education system is still stuck in old age. It faces alot of problems that need to be sorted to let it reach it's full potential.
He said, to start we see how the Ghanaian education focuses on theory rather than being practical. Only a little percentage is given for practical. This makes them run after the bookish knowledge and not actually applying it to the real world. This practice makes the perplexed when they go out in the real world due to practical knowledge. It will interest you to know that, students in the secondary cycle offering science do not visit the laboratories for practicals but always studying huge books full of theories only. The fact is that, the world today needs people who are practical. People who can really transfer theories and practicals into existence. I mean people who are innovative. I wasn't surprise when the 2021 National science and Maths quiz winners wasn't able to rearrange the digestive system in Durbar. It all bows down to the fact our education system is theorical.
He added that, the Ghanaian education system does not emphasize enough on the importance of sports and arts. Students are always asked to study all the time which deprive them the time to participate in arts and sporting activities. Students with talents like singing, drawing, footballing and many more are less valued and Catered for. He said, elsewhere in the world, young musicians, footballers are trained and groomed very well to become national assets and great personalities but here in Ghana, our education system has no enough provision for people with talents. The big question is that, have we forgotten that footballers, musicians, artist pay huge taxes to the government in the western world. Example Spain, Italy and Germany. These countries generate greater monies from people with talents. Example footballers.
He said, students with technical and vocational skills are less catered for.Even the institutions in our country that focuses on vocational a d technical training faces problems like inadequate infrastructure and facilities and other necessary tools and equipment which is sad.
He added that, the syllabus used for teaching is out of date and
archaic. it will interest you to know that, in this 21st century students still learn theories that were effective in years like 1937,1924,1947 and others. All the syllables follow the old pattern rather than focusing on the current trend of the world.
Another problem is that, our system faces poor grading system. It judges the intelligence of a student on the basis of academics which is in a form of exams. This is very unfair to students who did well in their overall performance but not good at a specific subject or field. Students only strive to get good grades or marks but not paying attention and understanding what is taught. In other words this encourages getting good grades and marks through mugging up and not actually grasping or understanding the concept efficiently.
He said, is so sad when you visit some of our villages. the state of some school blocks are very bad and the once that are in condition too, students are overcrowded in them. it so sad.
He concluded that, i think the government is doing alot but he can do better. I recommend that the education ministry and Ghana education service should review the syllables and the curriculum, the government provide good
infrastructure and facilities for schools and colleges, condition of service for teachers should be better and a better measure should be taken to cater for students with talents and those in vocational and technically training schools. i believe if these are put in place our education system will see light and will one of the best . thank you.
